Fright Years turn the search for yourself into a soaring anthem on 'Dye Star'

Edinburgh's Fright Years step into their most ambitious chapter yet.

DYE STAR

Fright Years return with Dye Star, the second single from their forthcoming EP, due February 2027. It arrives September 18th via LAB Records.

Fresh from supporting Belle and Sebastian, and with their November show at Glasgow's King Tut's sold out three months in advance, the band arrive at Dye Star matching the growth of their audience with the growth of their sonic ambition. Producer Pete Hutchings (Royal Blood, Gang of Youths, The Amazons) helps them realise a more layered sound: the work of a band maturing into their craft.

If last single Never Been Wrong looked back with clarity, Dye Star looks inward with slight uncertainty: an equally honest chapter in the same story. The track explores the cycle of self-fashioning, the space between trying on different versions of yourself and finally stepping into the one you recognise.

“Dye Star is the journey towards trusting your own vision and having the courage to stand by your decisions. Lyrically it questions how many versions of yourself there will be before you feel fulfilled,

and why happiness can stem from something small on one day and be reserved for a grand vision

of yourself on another. The song doesn't give an answer, because I don't have one yet, but

repeating the question to the end, 'how do I know when I get what I want', makes the unknown feel

brighter.”

Jules Kelly, Fright Years

Musically, Dye Star marks another step up. Juliette Kelly (vocals, piano), Harrison MacLeod-Bonnar

(guitars), Struan Blacklock (drums) and Fraser Charleson (bass) trade the rawness of debut EP Still Life for something denser and more assured. Glitchy piano swells, layered guitars and a tighter, more propulsive rhythm section build driving verses into a soaring, anthemic chorus, with Kelly's vocal shifting from restrained introspection to full-throated release. It is a song equally built for the drive home alone and for a festival crowd singing every word back.

After selling out their debut UK tour earlier this year, Fright Years step into autumn with a growing

fanbase behind them and their biggest UK run to date: support slots with Lucia & The Best Boys in

October, then a headline tour through November.

With Dye Star, Fright Years are announcing who they're becoming: a band shedding every version of themselves that stayed small, and stepping into the one that finally shows them for what they are. Confident, full of hope and here to be counted.
